Extra License Is Born
Our latest community, ExtraLicense.com, was an afterthought. When XenForo was declared stable on March 8th, I purchased an additional license (my third) just to say thank you the the dev’s for creating such a great piece of community orientated software. So I was thinking, what do I do with this extra license. ExtraLicense.com was then born.
I have seen, and used, many different webmaster forums with “marketplace” sections for members to buy and sell things like licenses, complete sites, domains, databases, etc. Most of these sites require a minimum post count, a premium subscription, or other criteria in order to list an item for sale or auction. Honestly, this always pissed me off. So I started ExtraLicense.com with the understanding that our main focus would be a central location for webmasters to buy and sell the aforementioned items for free and without restriction.
My initial “dream” was to code an API which communicates with the respective developers’ website to verify the eligibility of transfer of the script licenses. This would add a layer of protection for the buyer and legitimacy to the seller. #winning We have reached out to several of the developers of different scripts to allow our server to communicate with their licensing schema to return a simple yes or no to a hidden field where the seller could privately enter their license number for the check, only to be denied, which I actually understand.
Perhaps one day, until then, members will have to do what they have always done, do their homework prior to entering in any agreement with out first checking out the legitimacy of the license.
